Counting

Read section 2.3 of the textbook, then answer these questions in gradescope.

  1. Section 2.3.2 talks about the characteristic sequences of a set X. Recall what is a characteristic sequence is. If X = {0,1,4,9,16}, what is the characteristic sequence for {1,4,9} ?
  2. Suppose we have 10 children in a classroom who are lining up to go to lunch. The children care quite a bit about where they stand in line because the closer you are to the front of the line, the sooner you get your food. Would you suggest using a subset or a permutation to model this situation? Why?
  3. What is the answer to the question at the top of page 66? What is wrong about the first (incorrect) solution?
  4. Compare examples 2.3.6 and 2.3.7. What is the difference between the question being asked? What is different between the method used to calculate the answer?
