How to prepare for class each day

There will be some sense of repetition in our class structure, so here is some advice.

Before class

  • Complete the reading (find a broad description on the Schedule, and find the reading links directly in Pweb)
  • As you’re reading, note questions, thoughts, and ideas that you have.
  • Submit your daily discussion on our webpage by 1:00pm on the day of class. The link to the discussion can be found on the Schedule. How to write a comment on our daily discussion thread:

There will be no prompts/questions from me on what your contribution should consist of, rather, as CSC-395 students I expect you to be able to engage with readings in a meaningful way. In your contribution you could bring up questions that you’d like your classmates to answer (and you can respond to your classmates), you could provide an analysis or critique (note that critique doesn’t always mean criticism) of some portion of the text, etc. There is no length minimum or maximum, but aim for 200-400 words if you’re not sure.

  • If you are required to lead discussion for the day, there are some extra things you’ll need to do to prepare. More information coming soon.

During class

  • Bring with you every day: The reading, your nodes, paper, a writing utensil.
  • Take notes during class, attributing ideas and quotes to your classmates.
  • Ask questions and otherwise engage with class discussion and activities.

Each Week

  • On most Fridays you have a “weekly reflection” due. The intention for this assignment is for you to bring together ideas from a full week of material (Monday through Friday).
  • Use the notes you’ve been sure to take throughout the week, from your own individual readings as well as during class.
  • Submit the reflection by 10:30pm on Friday in Gradescope.
